Island Gymnastics Academy athletes saw plenty of podium finishes at the annual Prince Edward Classic competition held in Charlottetown over the weekend. The Academy has hosted the event for the past twenty years. Over 450 gymnasts attended from the top Atlantic clubs, including two-time Olympian and 2015 Pan Am Champion, Ellie Black.  Black thrilled the younger gymnasts at Sunday morning session when she arrived to sign autographs. Black has attended the Prince Edward Classic since she was a young gymnast.

Highlights from the women’s competition included gold in the all-around from Sophie Mayne in Tyro 8, MacKenzie Paton in Open 6, Emma King in Tyro 7, Lexie Scharman in Novice 4, and Victoria Covey in Argo 6. Silver all-around medals were earned by Charlotte Thompson in Tyro 7, in Novice 6 by Katie Gaudet, a tie in Tyro 6 by Annika Trivers and in Tyro 4 by Meredith Morgan. Karisa Quinn took the overall bronze medal in the Novice 8 category. Gold event medals were also won by Lilly Chappell on beam, Katie Gaudet on vault, Annika Trivers on floor, and Lorynn Crawford on floor.

On the men’s team, Alex Mann outscored several members of the Canadian Championships National Open gold medal team from 2016 to take 1st place all-around in that category. In Elite 2, Ryan Dwyer took gold and Jaycob Frank won the silver all-around. In Level 4 under 13, Ethan Arsenault was the all-around champion and Trent Quinn took the silver. Trent McClure also won apparatus gold on parallel bars and high bar. Alex Zakem posted the top score in physical preparation in the Level 1 under 12 category. Isaac Landry won gold on vault in Level 1 under 8. In Level 1 under 10 Ben Simpson was the all-around champion and Ethan Mayne took the silver medal.
