32nd ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS

Outstanding Gymnasts Named at Annual Awards Banquet

At the Island Gymnastics Academy’s recent Annual Awards Banquet, the club’s top gymnasts were honored for the 2013-2014 season.  Gymnasts were selected from each training group based on competitive results, work ethic, level of improvement over the year and sportsmanship. Participation medals were also awarded to the Academy’s Mini Tumblers to recognize their dedication and achievements in the pre-competitive program.

It was a busy year for the Academy’s competitive teams, who travelled to numerous competitions in the region as well as events in Bermuda, Dallas, Montreal, Ottawa, and Calgary.   Island Gymnastics Academy also hosted the 2014 Atlantic Championships, and led team PEI at the Eastern Canadian Championships in Oshawa and the Canadian Gymnastics Championships in Ottawa. The club’s programs continue to grow with over 1000 registered gymnasts.

In the women’s program, award winners included Annika Landry, Victoria Zakem, Jacquelyn Taylor, Katie Gaudet, Rae-lee MacDonald, Natalie Haddad, Bria Gallant, Karisa Quinn and Ella MacDougall.

The men’s program winners included Issac Bourque, Gabriel Ing, Simon Burns and Scott Chandler.

“We have a lot of talented athletes in our competitive program. This was a very rewarding year and we continue to build on our success.” adds Head Coach Jim Rand.

International Level Coaches on PEI for Training Camp

PEI’s Canada Games 2015 women’s gymnastics training team will take part in a training camp on June 21-22 as part of their preparation for team selection next fall. Hosted by Island Gymnastics Academy, the camp will also include coach education sessions open to all PEI coaches and a training session for Level 3 and 4 girls.

Guest coaches will be Nick Blanton Nick Blantonand Carola Baker. Blanton is currently Head Coach of Fundy Gymnastics in Saint John, N.B. His many accomplishments include his role as the director of International Gymnastics Camp in the U.S., and coaching numerous National Team gymnasts in Great Britain. He is also a highly regarded clinician and gymnastics expert. Baker is a NCCP Level 4 Master Coach who has produced numerous national champions. She graduated with High Honours from the Seneca College Coaching Program and was herself a Central European AA silver medalist.

“ Our local gymnasts and coaches always learn so much from these training camps. We really value collaborating with coaches from other clubs. It’s an important part of our training program.” says Sharon Gareau, Technical Director of Gymnastics PEI.

Island Gymnastics Academy Athletes Celebrate with Annual Gymstrada

Gymstrada

Gymnasts from the Island Gymnastics Academy will perform their annual gymnastics dance and tumbling extravaganza, Gymstrada, at UPEI on June 6 and 7.  An Academy tradition for over twenty-five years, the year end show features both recreational and competitive gymnasts from pre-school to National level.  The competitive girls will feature numbers choreographed by Galina Terentieva, who directs the dance program for the club.

 “Each year our Gymstrada gets even better. I am always impressed by how entertaining the show is. ” says Recreation Director, Shelley Parker.

 Island Gymnastics Academy continues to expand its programs and registered over 1000 gymnasts this season. The performances run at 6:00pm on Friday and 11:00 am on Saturday and are open to the public.
