Island gymnasts inspired by Olympian Ellie Black

Olympic gymnast Ellie Black had a crowd of young fans eager to meet her during the recent Prince Edward Classic competition in Charlottetown. A key member of Canada’s most successful women’s gymnastics team in history, and current Canadian champion, Black wowed spectators with her world class routines. In addition to Black, men’s Canadian champion Hugh Smith was also competing. Island Gymnastics Academy has hosted this competition annually for the last eighteen years and it is the largest of its kind east of Montreal.

“It was exciting for our senior gymnasts to share the competition floor with Ellie Black. She is a great inspiration for our local athletes.”  says Meet Director Lea Rand.

Island Gymnastics Academy gymnasts had close to 300 podium finishes over the weekend, winning the all-around gold in seven categories, and event gold medals on numerous apparatus. Open 2 champion Jenny Campbell led the girls’ team with the highest Academy score, an impressive 49.80. She also won beam and floor. Reese Kelly was PEI’s top Level 4, winning the gold in the Tyro 4 all-around and taking first place on vault, bars, and beam. Tessa McGuigan took the silver medal in the Novice 4 category.

In Open 3 Megan Doucette was first overall and the gold medalist on floor. Tyro 3 girls had a strong showing with Karisa Quinn winning the silver in the all-around and gold on vault. Teammate Jenaya Ross was third overall. In Novice 3, Alicia Muttart was the top performer with a bronze all-around medal. Teammate Alexa McClure took the gold medals on both bars and beam.  Lauren MacDonald took first overall in a strong field of competitors in Tyro 2. Sophie Mayne was the Argo 2 floor champion. Maggie Campbell was the Argo 1 champion with teammate Emily Gallant claiming the bronze overall medal. Academy Argo 1 girls also won several event gold medals. Emily Gallant won bars, Ella MacDougall and Lilly Chappell won beam, and Lindsay Ching won floor. Ella Hickey took the silver medal in the all-around and the gold on bars.

Gabriel Ing added to his recent win in Nova Scotia with the all-around gold medal in Level 1 under 10. He also won floor, parallel bars, and high bar. Also in Level 1, Simon Burns was second all-around and took the gold on rings and vault in the over 12 category. Teammate Ben Davidson was third all-around in the under 12 category. In Level 2 under 10, Trent Quinn took the gold overall as well as first place on floor, pommels, vault and parallel bars.

In Level 3 under 13, Jacob Carver was the vault champion. In the over 13 category, Donovan Ching won overall bronze and took first place on vault. In Level 4 over 13, Ryan McKenna was second all-around and first on high bar. Isaac Bourque was third overall in Pre-Argo Elite and took the gold on parallel bars. In National Open, Blaise Roberts was first overall and also took the gold medal on pommels, rings and parallel bars. Sam Mallett won the gold medal on high bar. Island gymnasts who qualified at this competition will have the opportunity to compete later in the season at regional & national championships.

Island Gymnastics Academy Hosts Atlantic Canada’s Top Gymnasts

Olympian Ellie Black set to Perform

The Island Gymnastics Academy will host over 500 participants at the Prince Edward Classic, January 24-26. The competition will take place at the Delta. The top athletes from all across Atlantic Canada will compete for a spot on their provincial teams. Olympian Ellie Black from Halifax will be performing in the Saturday evening session, testing her routines in preparation for her upcoming international competitions. Japanese gymnast Koji Masui will also be competing in the Senior Men’s category on Saturday night. Masui was a top competitor for Chyuko University prior to moving to Nova Scotia where he trains and coaches. Island athletes who qualify at this competition have the opportunity to compete later in the season at regional & national championships. Island Gymnastics Academy has hosted this competition annually for the last eighteen years and it is the largest of its kind east of Montreal.

 “This competition is the premiere invitational competition for our region and an important qualifier for our provincial teams.” says Meet Director Lea Rand.

This event is open to the public providing Island gymnasts the opportunity to showcase their talents for a hometown crowd. The Saturday evening session, which begins at 4:00pm, will feature the National level athletes and promises to be an exciting competition.

Strong Performance by Island Gymnastics Academy Boys at Nova Scotia Competition

The Island Gymnastics Academy boy’s competitive team recently competed at the Dartmouth Titans Invitational (January 10-11) in Nova Scotia. This annual event attracts over 400 of the region’s best gymnasts.

Gabriel Ing led the Level 1 under 10 boys with a first place finish in the all-around, as well as first on pommels and second on floor, vault, and high bar. Teammate Ethan Arsenault was sixth all-around and won a third place ribbon on pommels. Simon Burns won the Level 1 over 12 category with a first place finish all-around, after earning the top spot on floor, rings, and high bar, second place on parallel bars and third on vault. Ian McKenna was fifth all-around in the Level 1 over 12 category and placed third on floor and pommels. In Level 1 under 12, Ben Davidson was third all-around. Davidson also placed third on pommels, rings, vault, high bar and parallel bars and took second place on floor.

In Level 2 under 10, Trent McClure was first all-around and was the top performer on floor, pommels, rings, and parallel bars. McClure was also second on high bars and third on vault. Trent Quinn was the silver all-around medalist, placing second on floor, pommels, rings, vault and parallel bars. Quinn was the first place finisher on high bars.

 Ryan McKenna finished first all-around in Level 4 over 13. McKenna also took the top spot on vault, second on floor and third on rings.

 In Level 3 under 13, Jesse Robertson was second on pommels and Jacob Carver was second on floor. In Level 3 over 13, Donovan Ching was fourth all-around and second on floor. In Elite 3, Isaac Bourque was fourth all-around, second on rings, and third on parallel bars and pommels.

 C.J. Keliher, Men’s Coach at the Academy says “All the major clubs in the region were represented at this meet. Our gymnasts earned podium placings in every category we entered, and we took first place in four of them.”
