Successful Competition in Miramichi for Island Gymnastics Academy Girls

The Island Gymnastics Academy girl’s competitive team recently competed at the Miramichi Invitational (Feb 24-25) in Miramichi, New Brunswick bringing home plenty of medals and their highest scores of the year.

 In the Argo 1 girls division, Claudia Swyer led the team with a silver all-around medal which included a 1st place finish on beam. The bronze medal went to Rae-Lee MacDonald who also won the uneven bars event. Rounding out the team were Dayley Wood (4th all-around and 3rd on bars), Hannah Lawlor (9th all-around and 3rd on beam) and Sofia MacBeth who was 4th on floor and 12th all-around.

 Argo 2 girls also performed extremely well this past weekend. Reese Kelly was 4th all-around and also won a special award for the most dynamic cast to handstand on bars.  Emma Christensen was 7th all-around claiming 4th on vault and floor as well.

 The Academy’s best performances of the weekend were from the Argo 3 girls. Emma MacIntyre was the gold medalist with an impressive overall score of 45.500. She also placed 1st on both floor and beam. Jenaya Ross claimed the silver medal all-around and a second place finish on floor. Karisa Quinn placed fourth all-around with 3rd place finishes on vault and beam.

 Shelley Parker, coach at the Academy says “The girl’s performed really well this weekend and posted some great scores. They also gained valuable experience by competing outside of PEI.”

Congratulations to our Girls and Boys competitive teams, who were competing away this weekend. 

The boys were in Halifax at the ALTA Invitational and the girls were in Miramichi at the “I Love Gymnastics” competition.

Academy Girls bring home medals from Taiso Cup in Nova Scotia!!

 The Island Gymnastics Academy girl’s competitive team recently competed at the Taiso Cup (Feb 10-11) in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia bringing home plenty of medals. As a qualifier for both the Atlantic and Eastern Canadian Championships, this competition helps determine who will represent PEI later this year.  The Academy had 27 girls travel to Nova Scotia for this annual event.

 In the Argo girls division, Sydney Landry won vault in Level 1 and Emma Christensen placed third on floor in Level 2.

 The Tyro girls had their best meet this season. In Level 2, Dara MacInnis claimed 1st on vault, 3rd on bars and 2nd on beam, for a bronze medal finish. Dara is currently the highest ranked Tyro 2 gymnast on PEI. Hannah Fong also placed 5th on floor exercise. In Level 3, Tessa McGuigan won the bars event and earned a bronze medal in the all-around.  Alicia Muttart was 2nd on beam and Selina Mahajer was 6th on vault and beam.  Paige Mills was 2nd all-around in Level 4, winning the bars title with her highest bar score of the year.

 In the Novice division, Clare Murphy led the way in Level 2 with a bronze medal all-around performance, claiming 3rd place on bars and beam. Jenny Campbell was 1st on floor exercise, with Elizabeth McQuaid taking 3rd on vault. Samantha MacAdam was 5th all-around. Level 4 competitors included Alison Muise who placed 3rd on bars and Annika Landry who tied for 2nd place on vault. Natalie Haddad, competing in the Open 3 division, placed 3rd on floor exercise.  Cassie Feehan placed 1st on vault and second overall in Open 5.

 Sharon Gareau, Women’s Program Director and coach at the Academy says “This annual competition features the best gymnasts from across the region.  Our girls competed very well and continue to improve with each competition.  We expect much success from our teams when we head to Newfoundland and Quebec City to compete for PEI this spring.”
