Academy Gymnasts Top the Podium at La Classique Gymnix in Montreal
Island Gymnastics Academy gymnasts competed recently in Montreal at the 24th annual Classique Gymnix competition in Montreal where Sophie Mayne achieved a PEI first; taking gold in the all-around. This marks the first time an Island gymnast has topped the podium at Canada’s largest meet. Mayne won the Argo 2 category with a first place finish on three of the four apparatus. Her Argo 2 teammates also saw plenty of success with Ella Nichol placing 6th in the all-around, 6th on floor and tied for 8th on vault. Ella MacDougall was tied for 3rd on floor, tied for 5th on bars and 8th on vault. Maggie Campbell earned a fourth place on the beam. In Tyro 2, Katie Gaudet earned sixth place on vault. In the Novice 3 category, Alexa McClure tied for 7th on bars and Bria Gallant took the bronze medal on vault.
This prestigious competition attracts close to 1000 participants and runs annually in conjunction with the Gymnix L’International, a World Cup event attracting the best gymnasts from all over the world. The team had the opportunity to watch a level of gymnastics beyond anything they have seen at local competitions. The international meet included gymnasts from Switzerland, Russia, Cayman Island, United States, Bermuda, Sweden, Mexico and Italy.
“Our coaches see great value in travelling to compete at meets such as Gymnix. It is the best meet in Canada to compete with high calibre clubs across all categories, and also have the opportunity to watch an international level competition.” says Women’s Program Director, Sharon Gareau.
