Successful Atlantic Championships for Team PEI Gymnasts
Team PEI gymnasts competed April 25-26 in Charlottetown at the 2014 Atlantic Gymnastics Championships claiming a multitude of medals, five Atlantic all-around titles, and a gold team award. The annual competition features close to 300 of the top gymnasts from the region and was hosted by Island Gymnastics Academy. It’s the tenth Atlantics hosted by the Academy with the largest PEI contingent ever.
Emma Lee Lyon posted the highest PEI girl’s score with a 49. 15 to win the silver all-around medal in the Tyro 2 category. Lyon also placed third on bars and fourth on vault and floor (tie). Ashley MacDougall was the floor champion and also took sixth on beam and tied for sixth on vault. Rae-Lee MacDonald was fifth on beam. Dayley Wood was fourth on beam. Mallory Doucette tied for sixth on bars.
In Argo 2, Sophie Mayne won silver all-around and was Atlantic champion on beam and floor. Mayne also placed fifth on vault. Grace Potter was sixth overall and took fourth place on bars. Ida Christensen was second on vault and fourth on beam. Katie Gaudet was Atlantic champion on vault.
Isabella White was the highest ranked PEI gymnast in Novice 2 with a bronze in the all-around. White also tied for fourth on bars and beam. Alyssa Mugridge earned third place on vault and sixth on bars. Tori Hogan was the Atlantic champion on vault. MacKenzie Arsenault won fourth place on vault. Beatrice Turner took sixth on floor. In Open 2, Clare Murphy was third on bars and teammate Jenny Campbell took fourth on vault and floor.
Kenzie Myers placed fourth all-around after winning the beam event in Argo 3. Myers also tied for sixth on vault, took sixth on bars and fifth on floor. Jenaya Ross led the Tyro 3 team with a fourth place finish in the all-around, a tie for second on bars, third on vault and a gold medal on floor. Karisa Quinn tied for the gold medal on the vault and tied for fourth on floor and fifth on beam. Emma MacIntyre took sixth place on vault and bars. Teammate Emma Christensen tied for fifth on beam.
Alexa McClure led the Novice 3 team with a fourth place overall finish after placing fifth on floor and tying for third on bars. Alicia Muttart placed fifth on beam. Dara MacInnis took second place and Emma Germain was fifth on the bars. Megan Doucette won silver all-around in Open 3. Doucette also took third on floor, second on vault, fourth on beam and fifth on bars.
Reese Kelly placed fifth overall in Tyro 4, as well as taking second on floor, third on vault and fifth on beam. Selina Mahajer in Novice 4 took second place on bars. Kaylee McCabe placed fourth on floor and fifth on bars. Madison Kelly-Maund placed fifth on floor, and Tessa McGuigan took fifth on beam. In Open 4, Annika Landry won silver in the all-around as well as second on vault and beam, and fourth on bars. Landry also took the gold medal on floor.
“The girls’ team represented PEI very well. We had lots of good routines and were pleased with our results. ” says Team PEI coach Alice Ma.
On the men’s side, Nicholas Handrahan led the Level 3 under 12 gymnasts to a team gold medal. Handrahan won silver in the all-around and placed in the top six on four apparatus. Teammate Jesse Robertson was second on vault and parallel bars and third on pommels. Tanner Clow was the Atlantic floor champion for the category, also placing sixth on pommels and vault and fourth on high bar. Jacob Carver was third on rings and sixth on floor. In Level 3 over 13, Donovan Ching was third on vault and sixth on floor, pommels and rings. Ryan McKenna was the Atlantic all-around champion in Level 4 over 13, claiming gold on high bar, parallel bars, and rings and second place on pommels, floor and vault.
In Level 1 under 10, Gabriel Ing won gold overall and gold on pommels. Ing was also second on parallel bars and floor, fourth on vault and sixth on high bar. Teammate Ethan Arsenault was fifth on vault. In Level 1 under 12, Ben Davidson tied for third on rings, was fourth on vault and took sixth place on parallel bars. In Level 1 over 12, Simon Burns won overall gold after winning rings and floor, and tying for first on parallel bars. Ian McKenna placed third on vault, fourth on floor and rings, and sixth on parallel bars.
In Level 2 under 10, Trent McClure won overall gold as well as gold on parallel bars, vault, pommels and rings. McClure also took second place on high bar and was third on floor. Trent Quinn took silver in the all-around and was the Atlantic champion on floor and high bar. Quinn placed second on pommels, rings, and vault, and finished third on vault. Isaac Bourque won silver all-around in Elite 3, following first place finishes on high bar, vault & rings. Bourque took second place on rings and high bar, and third on pommels.
In National Open, Matt Gallant took gold overall and gold on all apparatus except floor, where he finished second. Alex Mann won silver overall, following second place finishes on all apparatus except floor, where he claimed the Atlantic title. Sam Mallett was third on floor, pommels, rings, and high bar and placed fourth on parallel bars. Ted Landry was fourth on pommels, rings, high bar and rings and took third place on parallel bars.
“The PEI boys were on the podium throughout the weekend against some really strong competition from the other provinces. ” adds Team PEI coach C.J. Keliher.
