Solid Performances by Academy Girls at Amherst, NS Competition

The Island Gymnastics Academy girl’s competitive team saw much success at the March Break Invitational in Amherst, NS over the weekend and won numerous all-around medals, working towards positions on Team PEI for the upcoming Atlantics in Charlottetown and the Eastern Canadian Championships in Ontario.

PEI’s top-ranked Argo 2, Sophie Mayne, won gold in the all-around following 2nd place finishes on vault, bars, beam and 1st on floor. Teammate Katie Gaudet placed 5th overall and 5th on bars and beam. Gaudet was also the top vaulter in Argo 2. Emily Gallant placed 6th on vault.

 Emma MacIntyre took the gold overall medal in Tyro 3 and 4th on floor and vault. MacIntyre finished 1st on bars and beam. Jenaya Ross was 3rd all-around, after placing 4th on vault, 3rd on bars and beam, and 2nd on floor. Teammate Bria Gallant was fourth overall. Gallant placed 5th on beam, and 3rd on bars, beam, and floor.

 In Novice 4, Selina Mahajer won gold in the all-around as well as 3rd on vault, bars, and beam and 2nd on floor. Tessa McGuigan was 3rd overall and placed 4th on vault, 2nd on bars and 1st on beam. Paige Mills was 6th all-around and the top Novice 4 vaulter. Mills also placed 6th on floor and 4th on bars. Chelsea MacLeod was 5th on vault and floor and 6th on bars.

 In Argo 1, Ella MacDougall took top place on bars and beam, 3rd on vault and 4th on floor to finish 1st all-around. Maggie Campbell was 2nd all-around, as well as 2nd on beam, 3rd on bars and vault, and 5th on floor. Charlotte Thompson was 4th overall, 6th on vault and beam and the top finisher on floor. Lindsay Ching took 2nd place on floor and 4th on beam. Teammate Ella Nicol was 2nd on bars.

 In Tyro 1, Ella Hickey was the all-around bronze medalist, also placing 6th on vault and beam. Anna Paquet won floor and also took 3rd place on bars. Tanisha Tawil won 5th on floor and 4th on vault. In Novice 1, Mya MacNevin took 2nd place on floor.

 In Tyro 2, Lauren MacDonald was the top Academy gymnast with a tie for 5th in the all-around, and 5th on beam. Lauren Rafuse placed 3rd on beam. In Novice 2, Sarah White was 5th all-around, 5th on floor and 6th on bars.

 In the Intermediate category, Academy gymnasts won four out of the five special awards presented. Ella Drake won Most Dynamic Vault, Regan Herlihy won Best Choreography on Floor, Annika Trivers won Most Dynamic Leaps on beam and the team won a group trophy for Most Dynamic Bars.

  “We were excited with our meet results this weekend. Such strong performances are encouraging as we move towards Provincial Championships. Our Intermediate girls won four out of a possible five special awards as well.” says Academy Women’s Program Director Sharon Gareau.

Success in Montreal for Island Gymnastics Academy Girls

Academy gymnasts competed recently in Montreal at La Gymnix Classique competition. This prestigious competition attracts close to 1000 participants and runs annually in conjunction with the Gymnix L’International, a World Cup event attracting the best gymnasts from all over the world.  The team had the opportunity to watch a level of gymnastics beyond anything they have seen at local competitions. The international meet included gymnasts from Romania, Russia, New Zealand, Belgium, the United States, Sweden and Italy.

Academy gymnasts competed against clubs from across Canada and the US. They performed very well in this strong field of competitors. Megan Doucette was the team’s top performer, placing 4th  place in the all-around in Open 3. Doucette also placed 3rd on floor, 5th on bars and beam, and 8th on vault. In Novice 2, Hannah Murray took 7th place on floor. In Tyro 3, Karisa Quinn tied for 5th on vault. Dara MacInnis led the Novice 3 team with a 6th place tie finish in the all-around, as well as 5th on vault and 8th on bars. Teammate Alexa McClure finished 7th in the all-around and placed 4th on bars. Emma Germain took 7th place on both vault and bars in the Novice 3 category. Annika Landry performed a new routine to earn a 6th place finish on bars in Open 4.

 “Academy gymnasts have competed at Gymnix for many years.  It is the best meet in Canada to experience high level competition across all categories and also have the opportunity to compete in an international meet.” says Women’s Program Director, Sharon Gareau.

Solid Performances by Island Gymnastics Academy Gymnasts at Halifax Competition

The Island Gymnastics Academy’s competitive team recently competed at the Halifax Alta Invitational (February 21-23) in Nova Scotia. This annual event attracts hundreds of the best gymnasts from across the Atlantic region.

For the girls’ team, Argo 2 gymnast Sophie Mayne had the top results with an impressive 49.82. Mayne took the gold overall as well as first place on bars, beam and floor. Also in Argo 2, Grace Potter was third all-around and third on beam and bars. On the vault, Katie Gaudet won the gold medal and Ida Christensen was third. In Tyro 3, Jenaya Ross took the gold all-around medal as well as first on floor and second on vault, bars and beam. Karisa Quinn was the silver all-around medalist. Quinn also won vault and was second on beam. Teammate Emma MacIntyre was sixth all-around and took third place on bars. In Novice 3, Alicia Muttart was second all-around and took the gold medals on bars and beam. Also in Novice 3, Emma Germain was fourth overall and Dara MacInnis was second on floor, third on bars and sixth all around

In Tyro 4, Reese Kelly was third overall and third on vault. Kelly also took the gold on beam and was second on floor. In Open 4, Natalie Haddad was sixth overall. In Open 3, Megan Doucette was fifth overall and third on vault. In Novice 4, Tessa McGuigan was fourth overall and took second place on bars. In Open 2, Jenny Campbell won silver in the all-around, placing first on floor and second on vault and bars. Samantha MacAdam was fourth overall and also placed third on floor. Clare Murphy took the gold medal on bars. In Tyro 2, Rae-Lee MacDonald was fifth overall and took second place on beam.

In Level 1 under 10 boys Gabriel Ing was fourth all-around and took third place on pommels and second on vault. Ethan Arsenault was sixth all-around and fourth on pommels in the same category. In Level 1 over 12 Simon Burns was fourth overall and took the gold medal on floor. Teammate Ian McKenna was fifth overall and took second place on floor and third on pommels.

In Level 2 under 10, Trent McClure was first overall and took first place on pommels, vault and parallel bars. Trent Quinn was second overall and placed first on floor and rings.

In Level 3 over 13, Donovan Ching place third on vault. In the Level 3 under 13 category, Jesse Robertson led the team with a fourth place finish in the all-around. Robertson also won gold on floor and placed third on pommels. Teammate Jacob Carver placed second on floor. In Elite 3 boys, Isaac Bourque was the bronze medalist, taking third place on floor, pommels and vault as well as second on high bar. In Level 4 over 13, Ryan McKenna was third overall. McKenna also won parallel bars and was second on high bar and third on floor and pommels. In National Open, Ted Landry was fourth overall and the gold medalist on pommels. Landry also took third on floor and parallel bars. Teammate Alex Mann was fifth overall, second on pommels and third on vault.

Jim Rand, Head Coach at the Academy says “We saw many strong routines at this event and our teams were very competitive in all categories. We were pleased with our results.”
