Provincial Champions Crowned at 2014 Gymnastics Championships

Summerside Saultos Host Record Number of Island Gymnasts

On April 5-6, Summerside Saultos hosted the 2014 Provincial Gymnastics Championships. It was the first time the championships were hosted in Summerside. Joining the host club were Island Gymnastics Academy, the St. Louis Gymnos and Victory Gymnastics Centre. A record number of Island gymnasts competed for provincial titles as well as positions on Team PEI for the Atlantics in PEI, Eastern Canadians in Oshawa, and the Canadian championships in Ottawa later this spring. The Atlantic Gymnastics Championships will be hosted by Island Gymnastics Academy on April 25-26 at UPEI.

In Open 4, Annika Landry and Natalie Haddad of Island Gymnastics Academy were first and second in the all-around. The Academy’s Reese Kelly was the Tyro 4 champion. Novice 4 provincial champion was Tessa McGuigan of Island Gymnastics Academy, followed by Madison Kelly-Maund with the silver medal and Kaylee McCabe with the bronze, both from Victory Gymnastics. Island Gymnastics Academy took gold, silver and bronze in Tyro 3: Karisa Quinn in first place, followed by Jenaya Ross and Emma MacIntyre with the silver and bronze. Kenzie Myers of Victory Gymnastics claimed the Argo 3 title. In Open 3, the Academy’s Megan Doucette won the overall gold and Elizabeth McQuaid, also from the Academy, was second. The provincial champion in Novice 3 was Dara McInnis of Island Gymnastics Academy, followed by Alicia Muttart with the silver medal and Alexa McClure with the bronze, also from the Academy.

The provincial Tyro 1 champion was Tanisha Tawil of Island Gymnastics Academy, followed by Anikha Greer of Victory Gymnastics with the silver and Megan Kinch of St. Louis Gymnos with the bronze overall medal. In Tyro 2, Ashley MacDougall of Summerside Saultos won the all-around gold, Rae-Lee MacDonald of Island Gymnastics Academy took the silver and Emma Lee Lyon of St. Louis Gymnos won the bronze medal. Sophie Mayne of Island Gymnastics Academy was the Argo 2 provincial champion, followed by Chloe Cudmore of Victory Gymnastics in second place and Katie Gaudet (Academy) with the bronze medal. Shelby Beaton, Victory Gymnastics, took first place in Novice 1, with the silver all-around going to Alyx Hodson and the bronze to Emma McQuaid, also from Victory Gymnastics. The Novice 2 all-around gold medal went to Emmy Mae MacLeod of Summerside Saultos. Alyssa Mugridge, also from Summerside Saultos, took silver, followed by a tie for the bronze: Tori Hogan of St. Louis Gymnos and Sarah White of Island Gymnastics Academy. Clare Murphy of Island Gymnastics Academy was the Open 2 champion, followed by Jenny Campbell (Academy) and Hannah Williams of Summerside Saultos.

In Argo 1 girls, Ella MacDougall of Island Gymnastics Academy won the overall gold. Isla Krol of Summerside Saultos won the silver followed by Maia MacLean of Victory Gymnastics with the bronze.

In boy’s Level 1 under 10, Gabriel Ing and Ethan Arsenault of Island Gymnastics Academy were first and second, followed by Cory Evers of Summerside Saultos in third overall. In Level 1 under 12, Santiogo Gomez of Summerside Saultos won gold, followed by Ben Davidson of the Academy with the silver. In Level 1 over 12, Simon Burns and Ian McKenna of Island Gymnastics Academy took first and second place in the all-around. In Level 2 under 12, the Academy’s Trent McClure took the overall gold followed by Trent Quinn with the silver. In Level 3 over 13, Dononvan Ching (Island Gymnastics Academy) won the gold overall medal. Nicholas Handrahan of Summerside Saultos was the gold medalist in Level 3 under 13, followed by Jesse Robertson and Jacob Carver from the Academy. Isaac Bourque of the Academy won Pre-Argo Elite. Ryan McKenna (Academy) took home the gold medal in the Level 4 over 13 category. For the National level competitors, Scott Chandler (Academy) won the gold in the Senior category and Matt Gallant (Academy) took the Open category.

Good Luck to our competitive teams travelling this weekend to Summerside to compete at Provincial Championships.  This competition will determine who will compete for PEI at Atlantic and Eastern Championships being held later this month.  Have a great competition!!!!!

International Success for Island Gymnastics Academy Gymnasts

Calgary meet

Academy gymnasts posted strong results at the University of Calgary International Cup, March 20-23. Donovan Ching led the Academy team with a silver all-around medal in the over 13 Level 3 category. Ching won the floor exercise, placed second on vault, third on pommels, rings and fourth on high bar. In the over 13 Level 4 category, Ryan McKenna placed sixth overall, after earning second place on rings and high bar, fourth on parallel bars and seventh on floor. In Level 3 under 12, Jacob Carver was second on floor and finished seventh on vault. Jesse Robertson placed fifth on rings and seventh on floor in the same category. In Elite 3, Isaac Bourque tied for 9th all-around and placed seventh on floor.

 “This international meet is an important competition for our athletes. The caliber of gymnasts is very high and clubs from across North America are competing” says Academy Head Coach Jim Rand.
